In case it helps.......her Occ was "Nurse" on the 1851 and 1871 census records.

I think it's as per transcription - Pilot's widow - as in River/sea pilot

and born Titchfield

I finally figured it out!

Yes.......hubby William's occupation was "Mariner" on the 1851 census.

So he must have been a Ships Pilot, guiding the ships into the harbor.

I didn't connect Pilot with Mariner......but i get it now.

The writing on the 1861 census is appalling. I thought.....how did she get from Nurse to being some sort of Pilot!! :-D

She wasn't a pilot in 1861 she was a pilot's widow.
