ArgyllGran Report 5 Jun 2018 18:59

I've found this Elizabeth Butler, a kitchenmaid at a private hotel at 15 -16 New Bond Street, London:

Elizabeth Butler
in the 1891 England Census
Name: Elizabeth Butler
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Relationship: Servant
Birth Year: 1866
Birth Place: Victoria Park, London, England
Civil Parish: St George Hanover Square
Residence Place: London City, St George Hanover Square, London, England
Sub registration district: Mayfair
ED, Institution or Vessel: 8
Neighbors:
Piece: 68
Folio: 53

Can any of you eagle-eyed people spot her at any other time, please?

I know it's a very common name, which doesn't help.

I'm really trying to rule her out (or in, with birthplace entered wrongly) as a possibility for my lost Elizabeth Butler.
I know the birth place isn't my Elizabeth's, but maybe it's a mistake (?? grasping at straws). My Elizabeth was a domestic servant in the same area in 1881.

My Elizabeth is as follows:

Birth:
BUTLER, ELIZABETH mms CLAYDON
GRO Reference: 1864 D Quarter in BANBURY Volume 03A Page 614

Elizabeth Butler

Elizabeth Butler
in the 1881 England Census
Name: Elizabeth Butler
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Relationship to Head: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Bodicott, Oxfordshire, England
Civil Parish: St Pancras
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street address: 11 St George Sqe [ called Chalcot Square since late 1930's ]
Occupation: Housemaid
Registration district: Pancras
Sub registration district: Regents Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 25a
Neighbors:

Elizabeth Butler 17

After that, I can't find her. She didn't marry, as far as I can see.
I've checked out all the Elizabeths born 1864-6 in Bodicote (aka Boddicot ) in 1891 and later, and none of the married ones are her.

She doesn't seem to have emigrated.

If she died in London, this is the only feasible death, but I haven't felt desperate enough to buy the cert - so far:
Deaths Sep 1933 (>99%)
Butler Elizabeth 69 Fulham 1a 286

There are a few possible deaths in other, but unexpected, places.

So, today I came across the 1891 census posted above, and wondered if by some chance she could be my Elizabeth.

It's probably an impossible task, but as the boards are quietish at present, maybe someone's up for the challenge of trying to rule the 1891 one out?

Many thanks in advance - I'll look back later.

(I have all the details of her parents and siblings - it's only Elizabeth who is a problem.)

Thanks for replying, safc.

No, the 1891 is at the beginning of my post.
Birthplace given as Victoria Park, London.

But the one you've posted could be another equally shot-in-the-dark possibility.

Elizabeth Butler is a very common name.

I don't know the districts of London well.

What reg district would Victoria Park be in?

Wikipedia says:
Victoria Park (known colloquially as Vicky Park or the People's Park) is a park and neighbourhood[1] in the East End of London, England.[2][3] The park is 86.18 hectares of open space [4], the park opened in 1845 and stretches out across part of Tower Hamlets, bordering parts of Bethnal Green, South Hackney, Cambridge Heath and Old Ford, such as along Old Ford Road, London E3 and Victoria Park Road E9. The name has also been applied to the neighbourhood around it which is entirely within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

EDIT:

But apparently there's another Victoria Park:

Victoria Park is in Church End in Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet. It covers seven hectares (17 acres). It is close to Finchley Central and West Finchley tube stations.

ErikaH

Victoria Park is in the East End -Tower Hamlets/Hackney area

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jun 2018 21:12

So the Elizabeth in 1891 could be one of the two born in Mile End in 1867 and 1866.
Or maybe one of the two born in Poplar, 1866-7.

Ah well, I don't suppose she really could be my Elizabeth with a mistake on the census record - it was just a sudden burst of hope that I'd found mine!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jun 2018 21:32

You're right about that area of central London called Victoria, malyon.

But that's not where Victoria Park is. As Erika says, it's in the East end.

Anyway, I don't think she's my Elizabeth after all.

Ho hum! Back to the drawing board.

Thanks for looking, all of you.

I can't see a connection either.

EDIT: Ignore this- see below

I was also looking at this- it probably isn't her but I can't find a marriage or birth for the children:

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Jun 2018 13:20

Yes, Elizabeth Bratt nee Sanders is one of the married Elizabeths born approx. 1864-6 in Bodicote whom I've investigated before.

There is no Butler relation named Charlotte as far as I'm aware.

Elizabeth's parents' marriage:

Marriages Mar 1851 (>99%)
Butler John Brackley 15 285
Claydon Ann Maria Brackley 15 285

I haven't found them in 1861.

There's a very similar family living in Daventry in 1861 - who have a daughter Charlotte - but that's not the right family, and anyway that Charlotte was only born 1861

My Butlers' children were:
