As Joyce married during the war, perhaps her marriage cert says something about a forces occupation.

AG ................

I gather short service was not that unusual in WW2 .............. met someone, got married and pregnant and had to take a discharge.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2018 20:37

Hadn't thought of that, Sylvia!

But they'll only have access to the same records as we do, unless with the addition of Fold3.

Lynne .............

there are 2 family trees on Ancestry that have Joseph, with parents Lydia Mary Bailey (1878-1967) and John Steadman (1879-1946), and 6 siblings ........ but no other documentation fro Joseph.

Siblings named on the trees ..............

Maud Steadman 1898–1898

John Steadman 1900–

Lydia Steadman 1904–

Ernest Reginald Steadman 1907–1978

Alfred H S Steadman 1907–1908

Lillian Steadman 1910–

I have no way of knowing how accurate that is!!!!!!!!!

AG ............... I thought some of the guys looked on there when they didn't bother with the other board??

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jul 2018 20:31

The military boards community are just the same people as on this board!

I'm not aware of women's forces records being available online - WAAFs, etc. There's not a lot for WW2 in any case, but it's all men, as far as I know.

If she signed up , it couldn't have been for long, having married in 1942, and first child born 1943.

thanks very much I'll ask now. It would be interesting, I wonder if that is how she met her future husband

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2018 20:24

Yes, ask on that board

many/most service records for WW2 have not been released, so appraoches have to be made to the Ministry by a family member.

Lynnedee Report 13 Jul 2018 20:21

Where would I be able to find out if Joyce did join up - would the military boards community be able to help me?

Lynnedee

Lynnedee Report 13 Jul 2018 20:12

Oh I wonder if Joyce did join the services, can't see why "posting" would be mentioned otherwise.
By the way, SylvainCanada - thank you for these pieces of information. I recall seeing a tree on Ancestry for Steadman at one time but I no longer subscribe to Ancestry and I don't know if there is any connection as I was looking for my own relatives at that time but I would have checked if only I had foresight!!

This is Joyce on the 1939 Register ...............

First name(s) Last name(s) DOB Occupation
Joyce V P Steadman (Bennett) 19 Jul 1919 Bar General

There is a note added to the right of Joyce's entry that says "see note on line below for posting"

But the line below is blacked out! It could be that she joined up?????

Lynnedee Report 13 Jul 2018 19:59

He mentioned 2 brothers I think one was Leslie, but I haven't been able to find a Leslie around the age of Joseph and there isn't one on Joyces' side.

I'm hoping some of the paperwork from my friends relative will be certificates to confirm any information.

Lynnedee

Lynnedee Report 13 Jul 2018 19:49

Yes that is the correct Joseph

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2018 19:48

As you know, you need the birth certificate to be absolutely sure, but this could be the marriage of Joseph's parents ...........

Marriages Jun 1897 (>99%)
Bailey Lydia Mary Birmingham 6d 235
Steadman John Birmingham 6d 235

Why should you be in the wrong???

It's a genealogy question!!

The only time helpers get upset if it is a paid researcher using us to do his/her work for free!

Is this Joseph Steadman's birth registration

I hope I am not in the wrong for asking for the following help and if I am please tell me and I will delete this thread. I am trying to help a friend with his family history, he is trying to get in touch with a relative who has apparently some certificates/documents to do with the family but in the meantime I thought I would start looking, At present the only details I have are :
Joseph Steadman born 1912 in Aston, Birmingham He got married in B'ham in 1942 to Joyce V P Bennett born in Pontefract, Yorkshire in 1919. They had 7 children (all living) between 1943 and 1961. The eldest was born and lived in Yorkshire for about 5 years before the family moved to B'ham. I found Josephs mothers' maiden name was Bailey and Joyces' mothers maiden name was Shaw.
I think the P in Joyces' name is Peace.
