Has anyone come up with 1939 census where a male member of the family has his name changed??
I have Henry Marr 1895-1948 Manchester England with family
Henry 1894
Mary Wife 1894
Robert 1920 his name has Maher written after
Elsie 1921 she has O'Neill wrote after
Harold 1923 Marr has been written after
I've seen the females name changed because she has married later but not a male

any idea's as to what has happened Henry And Mary Elizabeth married in Sept 1916 It would appear she had a son before she married

Sylann Report 14 Jul 2018 16:04

Just noticed Joyce Hurst if she married in 1943 she wouldn't be a Maher in 1939

As I say I'll have to look at this properly tomorrow sorry duty calls

Joyce (Hurst) on the 1939 register......indicates that she later married a Mr Maher.

Her maiden name was (Hurst) at the time of the 1939 register.

Which she did in 1943.

All the females in the family are shown with their married names and nee name in brackets. Hurst is the name written originally when the register was compiled. When they married, the surname was updated on the register, as this was now the name they were known as. Some have just M noted in the margins to indicate the change was due to marriage. Others have a date written in. This is not necessarily the date of the marriage, but the date the change of name was made on the register. With the DOB's of most of them there is no way they could have been married by 1939 anyway!

Thank you I tried to get the 1881 census just about to put Hanson in
I'll put all this in my tree I think I'll have to give up on finding out why the children of Henry 1894 son of John & Mary E Adams named their children Maher

Thank you for your help

IF John Edwin deserted as Marr in 1898, is it possible that he changed the spelling of his surname to Maher in an attempt to avoid being caught later on??????

You could just do it back then, tell anyone who needed to know that it was done.

Even in the 1950s and 1960s, it was common to see notices in the Personal Notices in the local newspaper saying "From this dateGeroge Smith wil be known as James George Brown. He will not be responsble for any debts after this date."

Sometimes it would give the actual date of the name change.

That was it ........... no lawyer, no court date, etc etc

It was perfectly legal as long as it was not being done for illegal purposes.

In this case I would suggest that John Edwin just began to live under the name Maher, maybe they moved addresses.

Whichever happened, one or more of the children then began to use the name Maher in every aspect of their life.
