Hi.
I am trying to find a marriage for Sarah Jane Cain born 3rd. Nov. 1850 in the Isle of Man. She was married to Thomas Henry Waterson born 24th. April 1844 in the Isle of Man.
I think that Thomas Henry may have been married previously to a Jane Cowell on 17th.June 1866 in the Isle of Man.
I have Sarah Jane Cain's father named John Nelson Cain.

I can't find a marriage for her to Mr. Waterman. Perhaps they just lived together if he was already married to someone else as divorce was almost impossible to get for ordinary people at that time.

Thank you all for your help in this problem. I think you are all having the same problem in finding Sarah Jane Cain's marriage as I have.
All your inputs are for the correct family.
I have a birth certificate for Sarah's daughter Matilda born 8th. March 1879 stating her mother was Sarah Jane Waterson formerly Cain. Matilda Waterson was my wife's Grandmother.
Hope you can use your expertise and uncover the elusive marriage of Sarah Jane Cain.

Have you found a death for Jane Watterson at all - maybe as Kath suggested, Thomas and Sarah had to live together. The married 36 years in 1911 could have just to keep face, covering the children's births.

The 1911 says married 36 years - has she counted from 1911 or when Thomas died. He must have died between 1901 and 1911 if she is actually a widow in 1911

Whilst this gives a window of marriage c1865-1875, Thomas and Jane appear to be together in 1871 on the Isle of Man census

I don't see a record of his birth - presumably in 1870 if Isabella was born 1871.

Don't see the birth of daughter Jane - in Liverpool according to 1871 image.
Also don't see her after 1871.

Neither Jane junior nor Thomas junior are with Thomas and Sarah in 1881. Did they stay with their mother, and if so, where?

But there are so many Waterson/Wattersons on the Isle of Man, many with the same first names.


Sarah's husband Samuel J (in 1901 census) is the same person as Thomas H.

so the marriage must have been (if it took place at all) between 1871 & 1881 as the 1911 census suggests
I would guess her father really was John Nelson Cain as she named one of her children with the middle name Nelson

Unless an IoM marriage record isn't showing online, it looks as if they didn't marry.
Perhaps because Jane was still alive somewhere, with her two children.

I don't know if this is Jane's son or not. Possibly not, as no middle name given.
Another Thomas Wat(t)erson was born IoM 1870-71, son of William and Mary Watterson.

I've just joined G Reunited but have done a lot of research on the Ancestry site. Sarah Cain was my great grandmother and Thomas Henry Watterson (or Waterson depending on which one he decided to use!) was my great grandfather. Their son William Alfred Watterson was my grandad but my dad never knew him as William disappeared after he was born and my grandmother found out that their marriage in 1916 was bigamous. I assume you and I are related! We probably have a lot of info we could share and I wonder if you got any further with your investigation. Like all the others who responded I can't find any marriage taking place between Thomas and Sarah and had assumed he did the same thing as his son went on to do ie had two families.
