Parish records become degraded over time. Dampness, mould, rodents all take their toll. Some have been lost entirely.

If they aren't legible, they can't be transcribed and the images are rarely posted online.

A few churches have refused to transfer their completed books to the diocese or county archives.

Assuming he was baptised, it could have been in a non conformist chapel, or RC church. Those records aren't readily available.

If you're considering he might be from a military family, have you looked for a baptism overseas?

Thanks. Tried Family Search, Find My Past and others online but all a dead end. There some other Charles in area but I've discounted those i knoww of. I wondered whether he was a (ex-)soldier as Colchester has a large barracks.

I know he stayed in area as have lots of descendents.

There seems to be more than one Charles Bolton too who lived in the Colchester area

Does anyone out there in "genealogy land" know where above Charles came from - his parents, ancestors? No birth details only death. He married Mary Nutman in Colchester in 1744 and his children were born there.

Not my Bolton line but researching.

Any help much appreciated
