George Bargust (1841-88)

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Richard Report 3 Sep 2018 17:21

I can't find George Bargust in any of the censuses or in the birth register.. He married Mary Ann Francis in London in 1869 and had children in the Paddington / Marylebone area. At the birth of two of his children, his occupation was given as 'carman'. His wife and children lived in Marylebone after his death.

Any information about George would be appreciated. With thanks in advance.

Is this his widow in the 1891 census? :-

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Salisbury Street, St Marylebone, Marylebone, London & Middlesex, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Birth place Occupation

Mary A Bargust - Widow Female 44 1847 Essex, England Laundress
Eliza Bargust Daughter Single Female 20 1871 London, Middlesex, England Charwoman
Charles Bargust Son - Male 10 1881 London, Middlesex, England Scholar
Rose Bargust Daughter - Female 8 1883 London, Middlesex, England Scholar
Mary Bargust Daughter - Female 0 1891 London, Middlesex, England

If this is the right family then I can't find any record of George other than his marriage and death.

I wonder if his name has been mistranscribed. Did George and Mary Ann sign their marriage certificate or make their marks? If they made their marks then they would not be able to tell if the surname was written correctly.

Could this be George's birth? :-

First name(s) GEORGE
Last name BURGEST
Birth year 1842
Birth quarter 1
Registration month -
Mother's maiden name -
District Tonbridge
County Kent
Country England
Volume 5
Page 490
Record set England & Wales Births 1837-2006

There is no other record for this George Burgest so maybe they could be one and the same person?

Mary Bargust and her children were certainly living in Salisbury Street Marylebone in 1891. I'm afraid I've not seen George's marriage certificate so don't know his father's name.

That 1881 census looks good, safc.

Unfortunately I don't see a birth with a name anything like that in Uxbridge 1840-50.

There are so many names which could be mis-spellings of Bargust (or whatever the actual name is!) in the general London area at that time.

Buying the marriage cert would probably be a good idea.

Thanks so much. The 1881 census looks perfect as well as the marriage. Now I have a place of birth and a father. Invaluable.

Transcribed Barguss here but original looks like Bargust. However he didn't sign his name, just made an X.

She's in the Convalescent Department, but the only address is South Metropolitan School District (Poor Law)

ADDED:

"Herne Bay Convalescent Home

In July, 1876, the School District opened a children's seaside convalescent home at Herne Bay in Kent. The three-storey building on St George's Terrace, formerly the Pier Hotel, cost £4,383 and contained 170 beds. Not being built for the purpose, it was said to be poorly ventilated, and the ground floor dark and depressing. The school-rooms had to double up as recreation rooms and arrangements, particularly for washing, were unsatisfactory. "
