Moira Report 8 Nov 2018 13:28

Mary Elizabeth Vickers was born 1869 Hoyland Barnsley Yorkshire, she married a Richard William Smith b 1864 Hoyland Barnsley.in 1885. They had a daughter Lily Smith b 1888, she went on to marry a Thomas Albert Baker in 1905
, The marriage broke down for Mary Elizabeth and Richard William Smith, I know that William was at his daughters house . from 1929 to 1931, this was Charles Mapplebeck and Lily as Lily had left her husband by about 1909 and moved in with Charles. at 7 Guest Street Hoyland
I think I have now found Mary Elizabeth nee Vickers formerly Smith, living with a Thomas Swailes and having a son in 1893 called Albert Edward in Normanton Yorkshire,(I have Alberts birth cert, and it gives his mother as Elizabeth nee Vickers formerly Smith on the cert. By 1911 I have a William Smith and a Albert Smith living with the Mapplebecks, I no at a loss as to if this Albert could be lily's brother,
as yet I have not managed to find a marriage for Elizabeth to Thomas Swailes.

Thomas Swailes was Albert's father according to his cert.
I would be looking for a Mary Elizabeth Vickers marring a Thomas Swailes

Thank you all for the help you are giving me, I would like to explain about the 1891 census, it is not a miss transcribe, Emma remarries after her her first husband Richard Smith is killed in the Swaith Main mining disaster of 06/12/1875, he was just 29 years old, Emma was married to Thomas Bills 12 months later on Christmas day 1876.

Moira ..........

it was all but impossible for almost anyone except very rich people to get a divorce right up until the 1920s or even 1930s as it cost so much money, and there were only 1 or 2 reasons for a divorce to be granted.

Plus it was a great disgrace to get divorced ............ although that didn't seem to always stop those who were wealthy enough!

So all ordinary folk could do was either move in and live common-law or commit bigamy, because marriages did break down back then at least as often as they do today.

Re 1891 -
it is a mistranscription as far as William and Fred are concerned.
In the image of the original document their surname is Smith, but it has been transcribed on Ancestry as Bills.

I did realise that their mother had remarried to Thomas Bills.
