I am wanting to order a copy of a Birth certificate for Mary Jane Hewitt born on 21st September 1870 in Maryport Cumberland England ( died on 28th September 1958 Thornaby Yorkshire) I am not finding this with my usual searches; Thanks for any help. You say her father was John - is there any proof?

Perhaps she was illegitimate and her birth is registered under a different surname. Have you found her on any census records before her marriage please?

I don't see either Patrick or Mary in 1891.


Can't see daughter Elizabeth's birth, either.
Unless, for some reason, it's this one, though I don't see how:

This is a John Hewitt and anther Hewitt Thomas both are boarders and Mariners. I can find Thomas in other census but not John.

One of the trees on Ancestry says Mary was born in Ireland in 1866, though with this note:

"Birth
21 Sep 1866 • Armagh, Northern Ireland
Mary Jane always said she was born in Maryport. There are no records of her birth there. Even the catholic fathers have tried to trace her. She may have gone to a school there but until I find school records. I dont know! She may have been born in Ireland."


No proof offered. If she was born in 1866, then she was lying about her age in 1901, 1911, and 1939.

The tree also gives John S Hewitt as her father (no proof), and in spite of saying he was born 1835 in Bangor, Northern Ireland, it also shows that 1861 Liverpool census which says he was born in Workington.

The tree says Mary Jane's mother was Margaret (no surname given) born c1839 - but doesn't back that up with any proof.

Can't take any of it as truth.
