Rose Report 6 Feb 2019 14:57

Hope someone can help my search for Herbert Warner Silcox on the 1901 Census, I have tried all sorts to no avail.

Herbert was born in1884 , he was the illegitimate son of Harriet E Silcox (born 1858)
They lived in Somerset.
in 1891 both Harriet and Herbert were living with Harriet's parents Reuben and Mary Ann in Norton Marleward, Somerset.

in 1911 Herbert was living with his wife Fanny and children in Chew Magna, Somerset.
They married in 1907

Harriet died in 1895 so would not be on the 1901 census but Herbert would have been 17 ( although on the 1911 census he has his age as 25) but I cannot find him at all in 1901.

Any help would be great. Thank you

Not the census - but don't know if you have this

Name: Herbert Silcox
Birth Date: 31 Mar 1884
Admission Date: 20 Jun 1887
Residence Place: Somerset, England
Parent 1: Harriett Silcox
School: Norton Malreward Church of England School
Year Range: 1875-1914
Description: Norton Malreward C of E School Admission Register

Interestingly, when he married he claimed to have a father named Alfred Silcox

Hi ErikaH, thank you for this . I had found this and this was the start of me realising that I had made a mistake. I had seen his marriage with the father shown as Alfred he was the brother of Harriet and had followed that route , - and giving him 8 siblings! I then saw this and also the 1891 census where he was living with Harriett and found that Harriet was his mother, she had died by the time he got married so he obviously decided to put his uncle as his father!

It is now all linking up but can't find him in 1901 Thanks again

I was also wondering about that 1901 census safc. Can't find a Samuel Silcox born in 1884 Brislington or Keynsham. Does read Samuel on the original document.

safc that 1901 census looks interesting . I can't seem to find it by putting in Mary Silcox etc as normal, do I have to put something different in to find a Poor house record?

Bingo ! Have found it now with Silvers rather than Silcox. The dates all coincide and Mary would have been Herbert Warner's Grandmother so possible.

Although not sure why he would be called Samuel and also I need to double check the death of Mary Ann Silcox as i had a death as 1892.

I will see if I can discover any more. If anyone finds anything else 1901 that could relate to Herbert Warner Silcox then great thanks

Thank you for all the information.
I have established that the death in 1892 of Mary Ann Silcox is not my Mary ann so thank you. this means that the 1901 census that appears as silvers could be the Silcox Mary Ann I was looking for.

Alviegal I can't seem to find the death record you have shown for 1905 I can only find a Mary Ann Silcox death in 1905 in Middlesborough. Can you let me know if it is definite bristol and if I need to put in another spelling or something.Thanks.

I know I may need to get birth certificates now to be sure but I feel convinced you helped me find the right people in the 1901census.

thank you all so much for helping

the death Alviegal posted is from this site which is free to use -

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Name: Age at Death (in years): Order:
SILCOX, MARY ANN 68 Order
GRO Reference: 1905 D Quarter in BRISTOL Volume 06A Page 85 Order

The site gives mmn from start of registration in 1837 through to 1918 for births
(free bmd and other sites only start at Q3 1911) - if no mmn there, usually means an illegitimate birth.
Also gives age at death from 1837 to 1957 (whereas freebmd and commercial sites only start mid 1860's)

Freebmd have taken the Middlesborough details of the one you found from the line below Mary Ann - who is actually Samuel !!!
