Janet Report 23 Feb 2019 17:47

My gt grandfather Johann Karl Wilhelm Gobel came to London in the 1860s, and married Margaretta Viohl in Bethnal Green. I have found them in the UK census returns, all their children, grandchildren etc. But I am having problems going back on the Gobel line.

He was born in 1844 in Wurrtemberg, Germany, father's name Georg (or Johann Georg) and I believe his mother was Carolina Gottliebin Schoch. Further back than that I cannot go. I subscribed to FMP in the hope that they would help, then found the World to them covers UK, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have been confused by the variations of his wife's maiden surname too, I have found three possible spellings of it.

I'm no good on German ancestry but please you're getting help here Jan :-)

Unfortunately, that's as far as I can go, as far as Ancestry's records are concerned.

There's another Barbara and Heinrich Gobel, which is confusing, but they're in the Hesse region, and have an umlaut above the o in their name.
That Barbara's ms was Fischer.

I joined the FB group German Genealogy, I've been shown 2 pictures of documents written in blurred German, which I can't read - one of them had a note added that it was Georg Gobel's birth, the other just that it referred to his wife, but no idea what information it contained.
