Well spotted AG- had doubts for a minute seeing that baptism- but it seems as though that Sarah died later the same year:

ArgyllGran Report 22 May 2019 11:50

She listed her father as Benjamin Hilton at her marriage to James:

Is this a different Sarah ??

Benjamin Hilton married Nancy Whittaker in 1818- but Nancy already had an illegitimate daughter (Sarah- listed with surname Hilton in 1841). Daughter Sarah was baptised in 1813:

Richard Report 22 May 2019 10:25

Thank you again. I am intrigued b the Pollett connection.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 21 May 2019 12:36

The Pollett name on the marriage obviously had some significance as this appears to be Betty in 1851 with surname Pollitt/ Pollett?:

1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census

Dirtcar Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England

John Milne Head Married Male 55 1796 Iron Turner Oldham, Lancashire, England
Sally Milne Wife - Female 53 1798 - Oldham, Lancashire, England
Ann Hilton Lodger - Female 7 1844 - Oldham, Lancashire, England
Betty Pollett Lodger - Female 11 1840 - Oldham, Lancashire, England

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 21 May 2019 12:32

Although she lists her father as Benjamin Pollitt, I'm pretty sure this is Sarah's first marriage:

Name: Sarah Whittaker
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: Full Age
Event Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 29 Dec 1844
Marriage Place: Oldham, St Mary, Lancashire, England
Parish as it Appears: Oldham

Spouse: William Wood

Margaret Wood Stepdaughter - Female 10 1851 - Oldham, Lancashire,

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 21 May 2019 12:21

As she doesn't list a father on her marriage, I suspect she was illegitimate.

I think the 1841 census posted by AG at top of page is most likely.

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census

Dirtcar, Oldham cum Prestwich, Ashton & Oldham, Lancashire, England

Benjamin Hilton Male 50 1791 Lancashire, England

Mary Hilton Female 15 1826 Lancashire, England
Margaret Hilton Female 15 1826 Lancashire, England
Betty Whittaker Female 2 1839 Lancashire, England
-------------------------------------

Benjamin Hilton married Nancy Whittaker in 1818- but Nancy already had an illegitimate daughter (Sarah- listed with surname Hilton in 1841). Daughter Sarah was baptised in 1813:

Name: Sarah Whittaker
Baptism Date: 28 Nov 1813
Parish: Oldham, Lancashire, England
Mother: Nancyy Whittaker
Register Type: Bishop's Transcripts

Sarah had illegitimate daughter, Betty, baptised in 1839 and listed in the same household as Benjamin Hilton in 1841.

James and Sarah/Sally's marriage:

James Whittaker
England, Manchester, Parish Registers
Name James Whittaker
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 26 Jul 1819
Event Place St Mary, Prestwich, Lancashire, England

Spouse's Name Sarah Howarth
Spouse's Gender Female

No mention of parents' names.
They both made their marks.

Witnesses: Thomas Grimshaw, Hugh Grimshaw, and Edward Redford. But the witnesses also witnessed many other marriages in that church, so they are no clue to either James or Sarah's families.

Thanks for trying.I have looked at Lancashire Online Parish Clerk but couldn't see the marriage.

According to LancsBMD, they were married at St James, Oldham

Unless its the wrong St James, Lancashire Online Parish Clerk doesn't list a marriage.

Assuming she was officially Betty, and not Elizabeth, this looks the likely birth:

WHITTAKER, BETTY mms HOWARTH
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in ASHTON AND OLDHAM Volume 20 Page 162

If this is her in 1841 (although age a year out) , there are no other Whittakers with her - she seems to be with a family with surname ending in " . . itton". I can't make it out.

Daniel Duffin (1842 Crompton, Oldham) married Betty Whittaker (Oldham 1840) in the Oldham District in1866.

Before I send off for a marriage certificate, does anyone have access to records of marriage in the Oldham area. I want to find out the name of Betty Whittaker's father. She was born in Oldham in 1840 according to the census records but I can't pin down a likely candidate for Daniel's wife.

Daniel Duffin's father was Joseph Duffin (Cotton Waste Dealer)

Thanks in advance Richard
