Silas Butler & Ann [ ? ]

ArgyllGran Report 30 Jul 2019 10:11

Just to round off this thread -

Nothing useful from Dea's links, I'm afraid.

I sent for the death certs of Silas (in 1844) and Ann (1840), just in case of any slight clue - though goodness knows what I was hoping for.

Silas's looks like the right one. No actual proof, but the scant detail fits - labourer, natural death. The informant was the coroner, so no help there, but I'm happy that's "my" Silas.

The 1840 death is not his wife, however. "Widow of William Butler, carrier."

Hey ho! I'll accept it's a brick wall, and give up on trying to find Silas's marriage.

Thanks for your interest.

I'll keep that marriage in mind, Malyon - thanks.

I don't think it's him, but you never know.

On reflection it doesn't seem to fit if John's mother was definitely called 'Ann' but I will leave it posted so you can at least discount it.

Would this site be of any use to you - you can apparently use the contacts page on the site to ask for info from many parish records they have.

It seems to centre on a place called Thorpe Manderville but that is only a few miles from Banbury and Kings Sutton?

http://www.thorpe-mandeville.co.uk/registers.html

If this is no good - perhaps they might know of other people locally who might hold similar information in the area you are looking at?

Thanks for looking, Malyon, but I'm quite sure that's not him.

He would have lived his whole life as an agricultural labourer in rural Oxfordshire/Northamptonshire.
London would have been like the dark side of the moon to him.

I wonder if someone could find the marriage of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Silas, please - on some obscure website, perhaps, as I've searched all the usual ones.

Spouse: Ann Maria Claydon

John's death:

BUTLER, JOHN 71
GRO Reference: 1890 D Quarter in BANBURY Volume 03A Page 546

PLEASE DON'T research John - I've followed him and his descendants all the way. His YOB varies from 1818-1822 in censuses.

Silas had another son, Thomas - please don't research him either, unless you can find his baptism. I already have all the censuses, his marriage, children, death, etc.. [But see below re possible baptism with father Isaac.]
His YOB varies from 1810 (on his death record) through 1813, 1815, 1816 on censuses.

Thomas's marriage :

Probably Silas's wife Ann's death and burial:

Birth Year: abt 1772
Burial Date: 11 Dec 1840

I have wondered if this could be Thomas's baptism:

Thomas Butler
in the Northamptonshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1912
Name: Thomas Butler
Age: 0
Birth Date: 2 Jul 1813
Baptism Date: 18 Jul 1813
Baptism Place: Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Kings Sutton
Register Type: Parish Registers
Father: Isaac Butler
Mother: Ann Butler

That couple also had a daughter Elizabeth (I've followed her through marriage, etc, so please don't bother with her either):

Elizabeth Butler
in the Northamptonshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1532-1812
Name: Elizabeth Butler
Event Type: Baptism

Baptism Place: Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, England

Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Map:
View this parish
Father: Isaac Butler
Mother: Ann Butler

In which case this would be the parents' marriage:

Isaac Butler
in the Northamptonshire, England, Church of England Marriages, 1754-1912
Name: Isaac Butler
Event Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 17 Nov 1806
Marriage Place: Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, England
Register Type: Parish Registers
Parish as it Appears: Kings Sutton
Spouse: Ann Coker

Perhaps Silas/Cyrus was previously known as Isaac ??

This could be Ann's baptism, although if she's the same woman who died in 1840, she couldn't have been baptised until she was about 16.

Ann Coker
in the Northamptonshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and
Burials, 1532-1812
Name: Ann Coker
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 29 Mar 1788
Baptism Place: Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Kings Sutton
Register Type: Parish Registers
Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Map:
View this parish
Father: John Coker
Mother: Elizth Coker

Can anyone find anything to prove it one way or the other, please?

Again, it's only Silas's marriage I'm interested in - please don't spend time on Thomas, John, or Elizabeth - though a definite baptism for Thomas would be a bonus.

The whole of that side of my family lived and died in various villages within a 20 mile radius of Banbury, from way back, until c1900 as far as my direct ancestors are concerned, but I expect there are still lots of distant relatives there.

I'll come back later.
Thanks in advance.
