..Haycock.

I've search for births of Harriet Spencer and I have two births in Coventry, one in 1875 and one in 1876.

The 1875 GR Record has the Mother's Maiden Name as Cakebread (widely held as the correct marriage on people's family trees).

The 1876 GR Record has the Mother's Maiden Name as Moore.

With real brain fog, i'm struggling to know which one is the correct one or is there just no way of knowing?

Thanks.

Is this their marriage? :-

First name(s) HARRIET
Last name SPENCER
Marriage quarter 2
Marriage year 1903
Registration month -
MarriageFinder ™

HARRIET SPENCER married one of these people

Maurice George Dadley, John Haycock

District Coventry
District number -
County Warwickshire
Country England
Volume 6D
Volume as transcribed 6D
Page number 1045
Record set England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005

The marriage certificate should name her father which would help find the correct birth.

This marriage record does not give a middle initial for Harriet which would suggest the 1875 birth is more likely.

Do you know if the Harriet you are looking for has any siblings?

I know this is probably quite unorthodox but would anybody be kind enough to drop me a message as i'm struggling with the Coventry Spencer tree. I had initially gone with some initial suggestions that had proven not to add up and spent 4 years taking them as gospel, then I started looking at Ancestry's Family Trees, it seems that everybody has gone on what looks best without factual accuracy and now nothing adds up on records. I'm tearing my hair out - or, I could just start a whole thread on Coventry Spencer's not adding up but i'm getting so confused there'll be 100 questions on it! Thanks. Quite often replies seem to conflict too and that confuses me even more.

I'm losing heart with it a bit as when you have a common Surname, like Spencer, people just start guessing and none of the commercial products for tracing relatives allow or emphasise the certainty with which they have made an assertion - it feels that it is too much like guesswork and not about fact to the point where I just might as well make a pretty tree and pretend I go straight back to Althorpe/Wormleighton without bothering to factually back it up! Sorry im ranting i'm just extremely frustrated.

Edit - not directed at you lot - if anything - I think you'll share my frustration!

Have you looked at the 1939 register that I posted above? That seems to be the couple you are looking for including the child Vera (who is actually Vera Maud but using her middle name).

You need to start with what you know from the present time and work backwards methodically buying certificates where necessary to confirm things.

If you want to send me a message with what you know for certain and I'll see what I can find.
