I'm trying to find what happened to Elizabeth Snowdon after the 1901 census.

Elizabeth was born 1848 to parents Edward Snowdon and Ann Dodd - Melmerby, Cumberland. Edward and Ann ran the Temperance Hotel in Melmerby. Edward died in 1886 but in 1891 census Ann is still running the hotel with son William and daughters Eleanor and Grace. Ann died in 1899 and in 1901 census the hotel is being run by Ann's daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1848) and Eleanor (b. 1866) and Eleanor's two children. I can't find Elizabeth or Eleanor in 1911 census.

Now apparently there are some old papers written by an Arthur E. Stevens of Keynsham, Somerset, saying that the Snowdons left the Temperance Hotel in February 1934 after 70 years. I've tried googling these papers but can't find any reference to them. If this 1934 date is correct then either Elizabeth and Eleanor were still running the hotel in 1911 or another Snowdon was, but I can't find them. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, different site and I've found Elizabeth on 1911 census - she's still at the Temperance Hotel but only with her niece (Eleanor's daughter).

That's a lot of great information, thank you. So it looks like the papers by Arthur Stevens were correct and the hotel was sold … wonder who bought it. Looking at the information, it looks like Janet maybe continued running the hotel after Elizabeth's death but I wonder what happened to her mother, Eleanor. I haven't been able to find a death ref for her. It all begins to make sense now, especially with that death reference for Elizabeth.

How did you find the newspaper references, I can never find anything like that.

Thanks so much for all this.

I had wondered about this marriage:

Eleanor Snowdon
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915
Name: Eleanor Snowdon
Spouse Surname: Taylor
Registration Year: 1915
Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
Registration district: Alnwick
Inferred County: Northumberland

BUT -
that's probably this Eleanor, also born in 1866:

Eleanor Snowdon

This is your Eleanor's birth:

As her daughter Janet is living with Elizabeth in 1911, it would seem quite likely that Eleanor had died - but I can't see her death either.

Actually, there are a surprising number of Eleanor Snowdons in the north of England around that time, so the marriage above is only one of many possibiities.

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 13 May 2020 21:44

It certainly looks as though Eleanor died but why we can't find her it stumps me. I tried looking for Eleanor or Janet on 1939 register but I couldn't read the image. I'm happy that you found the info about the Temperance Hotel ownership for me though.

I don't live in the UK but on a visit there several years ago, I made a brief visit to Melmerby. It's a small village - like going back in time - quite charming, but you'd think it would be easy to find info when the place is so small. I couldn't even search the churchyard because of some restoration work being carried out.

Thanks for your help.

Found a few more newspaper snippits. I have fmp and this time I put Temperance Hotel in the name section and Melmerby in the What Else box.

The Newin House Temperance Hotel, a popular summer resort for cyclists and visitors at Melmerby, was offered at an auction sale on Tuesday afternoon in St Andrew's Parish Rooms, Penrith by Messrs Thornborrow and Co. The owner and occupier of the premises, Miss A Toppin, was retiring because of ill health.
An opening bid of £200 was received but as the reserve price had not been reached at £300 and no further bids were forthcoming the property was withdrawn.

19 December 1939 - Penrith Observer - Penrith, Cumberland, England

NEWIN HOUSE TEMPERANCE HOTEL

Yvonne Report 14 May 2020 17:31

So it looks like the hotel was actually sold in 1934 to Miss Toppin and that's when the Snowdons moved out. It looks like the correct Janet, everything seems to fit. I guess I could get the birth certificate for her and see if the dates match up. I'll have to wait a while though, it seems the GRO site is not working now. I've had a certificate on order for two months now and haven't received it.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm also waiting for a certificate from GRO, only been a couple of weeks though.

This is Janet's baptism. As you can see, it's the right time of the year but the year is out by 1, going by the 1939 register.
