MARRIAGE OF George HAMMOND/Ann HORN in ca 1877/8

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Peter Report 9 Jul 2020 09:02

I am trying to find the marriage details of my late Uncle Henry Westbury’s in laws, he married their daughter Florence Lillie Hammond (born in Dover in 1886) on 27/09/1910. Both my Uncle and Aunt died many years before I was born.
The details of his in-laws are as follows:-
George HAMMOND born in LITTLEBOURNE, Kent in ca 1853 & his wife(?)
Ann HORN born in BLEAN, Kent in 1858.
They are shown as being married in the 1881, 1891, 1901 & 1911 censuses and in the latter census, shown as being married for 33 years, ie in 1877/78. Their eldest child was born in HYTHE, Kent and the mother’s maiden name is shown as HORN.
Living abroad does not make this task too easy and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards

I had come to the same conclusion but I thought that I would give this message board a final and possibly futile chance!
Thanks Shirley

Could George have been already married to someone else, and not free to marry Ann?

BTW, living outside the UK is no hindrance to online research.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my message, it is much appreciated. I realise now that I should have made it clear that it wasn’t online records I meant but local church records, as I know that not all of this type of record is, as yet, fully online. I didn’t mean to waste anyone’s time and should have been more precise. I apologise.
Kind regards
Peter

No-one’s time has been wasted, Peter.

But you may like to consider looking for a marriage for George which would have prevented his marrying Ann.

At the moment, as I’m sure you know, UK Records Offices are not open, so it simply isn’t possible to access info anywhere except on line.

There is no birth record for an Ann (or similar) Horn(e) in Blean 1852-1870 and later.

There's a Minnie Horne born in Blean in 1859, but she's accounted for in later censuses and marriage.

For elimination -
this is NOT Ann's birth below - this child died.

HORNE, ANN JANE PAY

Death:
HORN, ANN JANE 2
GRO Reference: 1862 M Quarter in GREENWICH Volume 01D Page 407

Her parents (Maria and William) and siblings (mms Pay) are in Greenwich in 1871.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jul 2020 13:11

The 1861 posted by Malyon, with parents George and Ann Horn seems to be the correct one for Ann 1859.

Possibly the birth of the brother George?

HORN, GEORGE mms BURTON
GRO Reference: 1858 D Quarter in BLEAN Volume 02A Page 528

Parents' marriage:

Marriages Jun 1858 (>99%)
Burton Ann Blean 2a 805
Horn George Blean 2a 805

Young Ann is not with her parents in 1871.

The 1877 marriage of George Hammond to Maria Jane Jenkins (also posted by Malyon) is a possibility.
I can't see any sign of that couple (or of Maria Jane on her own) after that.

Perhaps they parted almost immediately, and George took up with Ann.

Thanks so much for all your help but it seems fairly obvious to me now that I can’t get any further with my quest to find actual marriage details that will link them both to their parents’ generation. The Hammond name was more common than I originally thought!
Kind regards
Peter
