I do not have access to the US census but I have the information below

2 June 1900- William John is a Roomer at Oakland City Ward 5 Alemeda California
1920 Census he is living at Home for the aged Little Sisters of the poor he is 84 years old
He is William John Hancock born 2nd March 1836 in Ireland & died 22nd June 1904 at Oakland California USA

So he didn’t die on board the Loch Torridon as per your opening post.

The ship was built in the 1870’s

So that’s the 1901 census I posted

But how could he be on a 1920 census if he died in 1904 ?

He was rooming at 1113 Harrison St, Oakland in Alameda Co, CA
(It's now abt 7 km SE of the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza, 500 m from Lake Merritt, aand 1 km from Jack London Sq on the waterfront that seperates Alameda Island from the mainland.)

Note date is not 1901.
NB The 1890 census was just abt completely destroyed by fire.
