If Moira's still living, she won't show up on the 1939 Register - if she was in England/Wales at all at that time.

Have been looking (as I'm sure we all have) for a John Eric Collins of a suitable age, dying between c1935 and 1958. No luck.

There are a few deaths of Johns or John E's fitting those parameters, in England/Wales/Ireland, but nothing conclusive - and of course we don't know what their middle names were, just from an initial.

Also lots of John E Collinses in 1939 in England/Wales - but we don't know his age , or even if he was in England/Wales at the time.

But did Moira have middle initial E as in the marriage to Michael D O'Brien 1975?

I found a moira hargreaves marrying a Michael d obrien in Trafford in 1975. Suppose I coujd try getting thst certificate to check age of that moira and if she was a spinster or divorcee maybe :-)

Oh no, was getting my hopes up then. Oh well. Thsnks anyway Mary. To be honest I'd have thought she'd return either to Ireland or London or stay Lancashire way. Maybe not burnley as too close to her adopted daughter.
She was also known as Mary as well as moira.
Thanks :-)

Yes kay it is him. Yes spooky. Thanks argyl gran. I'll follow up that lead. Year of birth is correct. Have I already asked if anyone can find moira or moyra Collins in the 1939 census. She's probably still living in Ireland. But can anyone spot msube a John Eric Collins with daughter moira or moyra Collins age 4 on that census?
I'll double chrck the date of marriage now. Barrie and moira married in 1958 on the 23 December. It says she was 23. Would that date fit with being born in July 1935?. Yes, I think it would. Perhaps I should get that death certificate. Though it might not help much as they don't give maiden name on them do they. :-(

Mary Report 11 Sep 2020 22:23

1939 Durham
Moira Palframan 8/7/1935 married Hargreaves
daughter of Stanley N and Dorothy G

She married Alan l Hargreaves 1961

So it doesnt look like the one that died 1989

Kay????

Kay???? Report 11 Sep 2020 21:03

HARGREAVES, Barrie Lionel. Died peacefully on September 20, 2019 at St. Andrew's Village where he received wonderful care, aged 85 years....family edited out,

how spooky its almost a year, when this thread appears.?

ArgyllGran Report 11 Sep 2020 20:52

Have already looked at that one, but there's no way to tell without buying the death cert to see the details.

For what it's worth, there's no birth of a Moyra Hargreaves in England/Wales in 1935, and no marriage in England/Wales of a Moyra to a Hargreaves, 1950-89.

Yes that's supposedly true. So maybe the Baker connection isn't a connection.? Oh well, back to the drawing board ????

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Sep 2020 16:11

I can't, not in England/Wales, nor in Ireland. Nor Scotland

You did say she'd been born in Waterford, and that her mother's name was Mccrane or Whelan.

Shirley

Shirley Report 11 Sep 2020 16:02

Yes Mary b I thought that but I've looked for a marriage between a Collins and a Baker and I can't find one thst looks possible. Can you. :-D

Mary

Mary Report 11 Sep 2020 16:00

Yes I agree, strange. I wondered perhaps barrie met her in London and she came up to burnley to marry and live? Her father was down as deceased on the cert. Her job was a clerk at an asbestos manufacturers. Her dad was a sales rep. Barrie worked in handicrafts retail and wholesale. So no clues ftom that either. I've emailed Hackney library to check if she is listed on the electoral roll for the period around 1958ish.
Her dad may have died in Ireland I suppose. I read thst dalston in Hackney was an area with a large amount of immigration. In the forties and fifties from all over the world so maybe moira came to England as an adult?
:-)

ArgyllGran Report 11 Sep 2020 15:01

Seems strange - though obviously not impossible.
She was living in Dalston, but married in Burnley?

Shirley

Shirley Report 11 Sep 2020 14:36

She was living in Dalston London. And her father's name was John Eric Collins. So at least I have a London address I can check out and and a fathers name and also age at marriage which said 23in 1958 so born approx 1935.

The marriage cert will not tell you anything other than her declared age, and her occupation, plus - if she knew it - her father’s name and occupation.

I really appreciate your help and advice with this mystery. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for extra clues from the marriage cert <3

Hi
I did not realise about the adoption. Getting bits of info. It's through a third person. I had no idea Ann was adopted out when I first got the info. I presumed Ann was still alive with the same name. Apologies.

Regardless of what may have happened to her mother, it sounds like a very unhappy situation if the daughter was adopted when she had a father living in NZ.
