I have hit a brick wall with this family.
My 4xgreat-grandfather is James Lacy (1744-1808). I am certain of this.
Then the trouble starts. I have a putative tree as follows:

- William Lacy (c.1705 - 1788) and Mary Toothaker
- James Lacy (1695-1735 or 1749) and Mary Hawksworth.
- John Lacy (1670-1746) and Ruth Fry.

The James Lacy / John Lacy generations were confirmed by another descendant but without dates. William married Mary Toothaker in 1728 so would presumably have been born between 1700 and 1710 but these dates don't fit with the James Lacy b. 1695, the only one I have found.

Talk about a tangled web! an anybody help me to unravel it?

Many thanks.
Angela

You say James Lacy (junior) was born 1744, and suggest parents William and Mary.

This is the only James Lacy I can see (on FS and Ancestry ) born 1740-50 in Bishops Waltham - actually this one's presumably born in 1739, but not baptised until 1740:

James Lacy
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: James Lacy
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 2 Jan 1740 (another FS transcription has the date as 12 Jan 1740 )
Event Place: Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire, England
Event Place (Original): Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England
Gender: Male
Father's Name: William Lacy
Mother's Name: Mary

Presumably a sister:

Mary Lacy
England, Hampshire Parish Registers, 1538-1980
Name: Mary Lacy
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 20 Sep 1738
Event Place: Bishop's Waltham, England
Event Place (Original): Bishop's Waltham, England
Gender: Female
Father's Name: William Lacy
Mother's Name: Mary Lacy

and another:

Catharine Lacy
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Catharine Lacy
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 23 Sep 1747
Event Place: Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire, England
Event Place (Original): Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England
Gender: Female
Father's Name: William Lacy
Mother's Name: Mary

Name: William Toothaker
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 27 Aug 1727
Baptism Place: Bishops Waltham,Hampshire,England

You say, "The James Lacy / John Lacy generations were confirmed by another descendant but without dates"

Can you explain, please?

I'm not seeing those marriages on FS or Ancestry.

How have they decided that James is the son of John?

Just in case the Toothaker marriage isn't the right one (although it is the only marriage showing up of a William Lacy and a Mary in Bishops Waltham) , there's this possibility:

William Lacy
England Marriages, 1538–1973
Name: William Lacy
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 4 Jul 1738
Event Place: Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Event Place (Original): Saint Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Gender: Male
Spouse's Name: Mary Darkin
Spouse's Gender: Female

Portsmouth is approx 14 miles from Bishops Waltham.
