His father is a bootmaker in his first marriage and a sailor in his second. Could he be inventing a father perhaps?

Dishart seems to be the name in Fife. Wonder if it became more anglicized when he moved down south. Just a thought.

The surname Dishart was first found in Fifeshire at Dysart, a former town and royal burgh located on the south-east coast between Kirkcaldy and West Wemyss

I'm afraid it doesn't look as if we can help with finding William's birth or father.

There's a Robert Disher in Fife on censuses 1841 and onwards, but he's born c1816, so not William's father.

He might be a brother of the William John baptised in Edinburgh.
