I found a death notice for the above in 1894 in the newspaper of his home town. He died in Shackeltford, Texas. He apparently was a volunteer in the American Civil War.

I’m looking to find his marriage and maiden name of his wife. I would also like to work forward from his children.

His parents were Thomas Masterton and Elizabeth Nevay (daughter of John, the Forfar Poet). I have all the information on the Scottish side of his family. Until I stumbled across his death notice in the British Newspaper Archives, I had (wrongly) assumed he had died before statutory registration began in Scotland in 1855.

This is his wife and children from the census. Any help would be appreciated. I have looked on FindMyPast without much success. Thanks in advance for your time.

Mrs. Rootie

Thank you ErikaH. Yes I had a look on there but only seeing his army pension details.

I don’t see his daughter after that 1900 census. I see his wife and son still in Texas in 1910 then zilch.

Thank you for your time.

Thanks AG. The military records (only transcripts) are on FMP but not the marriage or the deaths.

My mistake regarding his death. The notice was published on 16 September 1880 and give the date of death as 23 August.

Thanks again for your help. Very much appreciated.
