There is no death of a William Foster in 1877-8 in Fulham reg district, which would have covered Parsons Green at that time.

At least not one born c1831.
In fact there isn't one of right age dying anywhere in London in 1877-8

Nor in the whole of Middlesex, for that matter.

What was his occupation?

If the marriage was in the UK the mothers name would not be on the certificate.
If the fathers name is blank that indicates that William was illegitimate.

Edit. Are you sure of the death because I can't find a suitable match on Freebmd.
