Find Ancestors

Hi I need some help with this family name- I can only find one person- there must be more!! The name is of Polish origin - any help or tips would be very much appreciated thanks Andrea

If you research in Poland it is probably one of the countries where you need to actually know where someone was born.

Any dates? Did the person marry in the UK? If so, a father will be named on the cert (if known)

Thank guys, I can find Jan Frank Szeithauer 19/8/1923which is the family member, marriage in Liverpool in 1951.I’ve ordered the certificate, and I’ll have to wait for that but I’d hoped to find more info in the meantime, like him coming into the UK etc I can see his death in Whitby in 1980. It’s a very specific spelling

It might be worth looking for naturalisation papers for that surname in the National Archives.

Many people anglicised their names due to the war so finding his family may be difficult.
The Americans seem to use Sch rather than Sz.

He probably came over to get involved in WW2, as did many of his fellow-countrymen

If he came over from Poland in the war, he may have a Polish Army record, which can be applied for , if you have a close family link, I believe.
These can be very informative and name other family members, a birthplace and may even contain a photograph of the soldier.

A UK death certificate after 1969 should give country of birth for people b. outside of UK, but they do not give actual birthplace.

A marriage certificate is the best place to start your quest for information.

Be prepared to be flexible with surname spelling.
Even English surnames can be incorrectly spelt and so then wrongly indexed.
I can imagine clerks having a lot of trouble with the surname you are researching, so look for similar shapes of words, ie. 'tall' letters or short ones in a particular formation.
