my grt aunt Alice married in 1921 to a William Browning
they married and lived in chatham Kent...they did have a dau. 1923

Alice re-married 1928 (without her dau living with her)
It seemed to be a family secret ( the dau) ....as my father b1917 new his aunt alice
and her 2nd husband as uncle Bert (Hampshire) no children.....

It seemed to be a family secret that Alice did have a dau.

What i would like to know is if her 'Divorce' made it to the local papers as some
kind of scandal...for the time.

Could someone do a lookup for me please 1923-1928

thanx!

Quite often in early divorces the mum lost custody so maybe it was too painful for her to talk about her daughter

Does the second marriage cert give her status as divorced

Are you sure the daughter was theirs as she was born in a different part of Kent ?

She was born and married in the Thanet reg district

Not open on the 1939 register as only passed in 2016

Yes, it did in reach the newspapers in Jun 1927 in Margate. However, the Divorce was made by Herbert's wife on the grounds of Adultery by her Husband with Alice Browning, a Barmaid. The Divorce was Granted and Herbert's wife was granted costs and custody of their child: could this be the child in question?

I'll send you the newspaper article after I've returned from walking my dog.

William also remarried in1928 and is on the 1939 reg with new wife and her children from her first marriage and their son

Two closed records one of which could be Renee E

I've found another article which also mentions Alice's Divorce

Have you tried the National Archives?
I found documents relating to a 1921/21 divorce.

London belle

Out of interest I couldn’t get any newspaper articles to come up on ancestry or FMP

Where did you find them ?

National archives do hold both records but they aren’t online ,they have to ordered and paid for

But national archives aren’t accepting orders at the mo

Ahh thanks

I thought it would tick the box saying it found something, didn’t realise it’s a separate search needed
