Working forward from 1949 -

1950 - Annie Fisher, John A Irwin, and William A Irwin.
1951 - ( maybe Annie was always in a different flat from the Irwins?? In 1951 there are other people listed between Annie and the Irwins ) Annie Fisher , then John & Phoebe Forsyth, then John H and William A Irwin.
1952 and 1953 - Same as 1951.
1954 - Annie Fisher (then the Forsyths, and Peter Goldie) then John and William.
1955 - Annie Fisher, then John and William - no other names between them, although others at that address in other flats.
1956-61 - same as 1955.
1962 - Annie Fisher and lots of other names, but no Irwins.

Aha!

There was no sign of them on a search for Irwin, because in some years the whole street, or parts of it, are just under "Preston Street" as a search term, and most individual names don't show up on a search.

In 1950 there are Annie Fisher, John A Irwin, and William A Irwin at 56 Preston Street.
Also a lot of other surnames, but they'll be people in different flats.

*****************************************************************************************
The Electoral Rolls don't give relationships, ages, or occupations, of course.
*****************************************************************************************

In 1949, Annie M Fisher, John A Irwin, Margaret J, and William A Irwin. Also Margaret Carnehan
1948 - Annie, John, Margaret, and William. (And Margaret Carnehan)
1947 - Annie M Fisher, John A Irwin, Margaret J Irwin, and William A Irwin.
Can't see the street in 1946.
1945 - Annie M Fisher, Margaret J Irwin. Maybe John was away in the army?
1941-44 - no ER, presumably because of the war.
1940 - Annie Fisher, John H Irwin, and Margaret Irwin.
1939 - Annie, John, and Margaret.
1938 - Annie, John, and Margaret
1937 - Annie Fisher and Margaret Irwin.
1936 - Annie and Margaret.
1935 - Annie Fisher. No Irwins, but there's a Mrs Margaret Carnehan among the other names - relevant?
1934 and 1933 - Annie Fisher, and Mrs Margaret Carnehan.

I assume William wasn't old enough to be on the ER until 1946-7 ??

How many more years would you like?!

ADDED:
Please note -
I didn't notice Margaret Carnehan until looking at the 1935 ER, but later noticed she's there in all the years in this post.
I've now added her to 1948-9 above. Haven't bothered for the other years - but she's there.

In 1937 and 1940 ERs
there's a William IRVING, with Anna Irving and Mrs Anna Irving, at 32 Preston Street.

But no IRWINs anywhere in the street.

There's nobody called Irwin at 56 Preston Street (assuming you mean Govan) in 1940, per the Valuation Rolls on Scotlands People.

There's also no Irwin at 56 Preston Street, Glasgow, in any year on the Glasgow ERs 1857-1962.

In what year do you have a record of him being at 56 Preston Street?

The 1939 register for Scotland isn't searchable like the English one.

You can apply to see a particular person's record, so long as you know the person's exact date of death, and there's also a non-refundable charge for applying - so it's really not useful for amateur genealogists like us.
