Irish/Ulster records can be quite patchy.

I've never found my late mother-in-law's birth record - born 1922 in Belfast.

As far as searching on GR is concerned - we helpers on the GR boards hardly ever use GR when searching for records, because of its limitations.

Just two examples -
GR only has English and Welsh births/death/marriages, plus a few English-based BMD records referring to other countries, such as British Armed Forces and Overseas births.
GR also has only the English/WelshScottish censuses - not the Irish ones.

Researching:
Old genealogists never die.....they just lose their census.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply to my message, I can see I have a lot of work ahead of me! I've started working through the sites you've suggested and am making some progress. I've also found the site familysearch.org to be surprisingly useful.

The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht runs an excellent free site at irishgenealogy.ie that includes full images of the original registers (births 1864-1916, marriages 1870-1941 and deaths 1878-1966). Be sure to work the “More Search Options” page as hard as you can.

Also holds earlier church records

Records cover the island of Ireland up until 1921 and thereafter only Eire.

There are some birth, marriage and death records for Ireland on Findmypast. If you want to give some names and dates someone will have a look for you.

There might be some on Ancestry but your best bet is GRONI. The General Records Office Northern Ireland - there should be advice on their website.

If you can’t find them on either the Irish or English/Welsh census then you have to consider they may have emigrated or moved to Scotland, in which case you need Scotland’s People.

I've got names and dates for a number of relatives in Northern Ireland in the late 1800s, but there doesn't appear to be any sign of them on this site. Nor can I find any birth, marriage or death records for those living in the 20th century even on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Are the records from Northern Ireland not available?
