Richard Henry AMBRIDGE, born c1859

Adrian Report 20 May 2021 11:55

Hello,

I have hit a brick wall concerning Richard Henry AMBRIDGE, sometimes listed as Henry Richard AMBRIDGE.

He married Lily DANFORTH in 1904 in Grimsby.
I can find him in the 1911 census as "Harry AMBRIDGE", his wife Lily and his brother George (born c1847) in Grimsby. Richard died 1943 in Grimsby.

But I cannot find him in the 1901, 1891, 1881 censuses.

I have found a Richard AMBRIDGE in the 1871 and 1861 census, in Ealing, west of London. But I am uncertain if this Richard AMBRIDGE is the same person who lived in Grimsby later on.

Any pointers would be most appreciated!
Adrian

He's a dock labourer in 1911 - perhaps he was a seaman before that, and not in the UK at the time of the censuses?

Just a thought!

Well I think this may explain where he was. I'll post more details as I read it. As you can imagine, this story made news all over the UK.

The 1881 census was taken on April 3rd

MURDER CONFESSED. At the Cambridge Police Coart yesterday morning, Richard Ambridge, labourer, Ealing, was charged upon own confession with wilfully murdering his mother, Anne Newman Ambridge, in the month of September last. He said that had done it because she called him lazy. He cut her throat and then buried the knife under a doorstep. He was remanded for a week.
02 April 1880 - Glasgow Evening Post - Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Hmmm very strange.

Richard Ambridge, the young man who gave himself to the Cambridge police, saying he had murdered his mother at Ealing, Middlesex, two years ago, was again brought up before the magistrates to-day. His story was now stated to be a fabrication as his mother called on the Superintendant of Police on Saturday. The prisoner was discharged.
08 April 1880 - Portsmouth Evening News - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

Some papers have the 'murder' as 'September last', another '2 years ago' and another says '3 years previous.'

Another paper reports that 'the Bench regretted that they had not the power to send him to gaol as a rogue and vagabond.'

Thank you everybody for all the useful information that you have given me.

I was told that researching the family tree can yield interesting stories, it certainly is the case here.

I think that I will look for Richard in Cambridgeshire for the 1881, 1891, 1901 censuses.
