Sandra

When did your husband’s aunt die? What was her name at the time?

How was she related to your husband - on which side of his family?

Possibly a big red herring, but having done some rummaging on FreeBMD,
am I right in thinking that your husband's parents married in 1958 in Northumberland?

If so, his mother ( Attaway) was born in 1931 in Newcastle.
However, although I can see births of an older brother and a younger sister, I don't see a sister Emily.

In that case Emily (who would clearly not have been Emily 1879 who married Whalebone ) would have been the wife of your husband's uncle George - but I don't see any such marriage.
Nor do I see any of the three siblings with their parents (Frank and Harriet ?) in 1939.

However, that may be entirely the wrong family, as they were all in the Newcastle / South Shields area - a long way from Faversham.

EDIT:

but now I see that Frank Attaway (your husband's grandfather) was born in Faversham:

Frank Gerald Attaway
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Frank Gerald Attaway
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 27 Nov 1898
Baptism Place: Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
Father: George Attaway
Mother: Minnie Agnes Attaway
FHL Film Number: 1835538
Reference ID: item 2 p 16 rn 121

Frank Gerald Attaway
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Frank Gerald Attaway
Death Age: 95
Birth Date: 3 Nov 1898
Registration Date: May 1994
Registration District: North Tyneside
Inferred County: Tyne and Wear
Register Number: C13C
District and Subdistrict: 0541C
Entry Number: 299

Frank's parents' marriage:

George Attaway
in the England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973
Name: George Attaway
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Birth Date: 1848
Marriage Date: 21 Oct 1876
Marriage Place: Faversham, Kent, England
Father: John Attaway
Spouse: Minnie Agnes Allen
FHL Film Number: 1886149
Reference ID: item 2 p 220

ATTAWAY, FRANK GERALD mmn ALLEN
GRO Reference: 1898 D Quarter in FAVERSHAM Volume 02A Page 867

So Emily Eliza 1879 (who married Whalebone) was his sister:

ATTAWAY, EMILY ELIZA mmn ALLEN
GRO Reference: 1879 S Quarter in FAVERSHAM Volume 02A Page 814

and therefore your husband's great-aunt.

It would therefore appear that the initials on the brush and mirror have no family significance.

Maybe Emily acquired them second-hand at some point.

Oh, I see!
From your first post I thought you meant that you'd been left the brush and mirror by Emily, and that you were mistakenly thinking she was your husband's aunt..

However, no, the initials ED don't seem to have anything to do with Emily.
