Good morning all

I am so puzzled, been trying to find the marriage of John Burke - Mary Marriott. I'm thinking it's going to be in Stafford somewhere. Their son James Burke was born 17.3.1863 Hateley Heath West Brom. This has been puzzling me for years

I think they also had daughters Catherine, Harriet and one other.

**Yes this is the family**. Thank you.
I'm looking for as much information as possible please about Mary and John (the parents)
My family have always believed that there is an Irish connection somewhere, but up until now I've not been able to find it.

Thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it.

You need to buy the marriage cert to see what info is given about John - father's name, for instance.

Burke is certainly an Irish name, but there were several John Burkes in Staffordshire in 1861 - assuming that's where he was at that time.

That death would certainly fit in with what I thought. Would sending for the death certificate have any benefit for me, would I gain any further information to add weight to it?

Also, if I went ahead and got the marriage certificate, how would I know if this is definitely the John Burke that I'm looking for?

Sorry for all the questions, I've been away from searching for years and it's taking me sometime to get my head round things.

Details contained on a marriage certificate prior to 4th May 2021
include:
• Date and place of marriage.
• Name, age and marital status/condition of the parties.
• Occupation and usual address.
• Name and occupation of each party's father.
• Names of the witnesses.
• Name of the person who solemnised the marriage.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/images/CG14.pdf

It probably wouldn't confirm if he was "your" John Burke unless you know Mary's father's name.

But the place seems correct, and the date fits with the birth of the eldest child.

ArgyllGran Report 17 Aug 2021 12:20

As far as the death cert is concerned -
It would confirm (or not) if that is "your" John's death, assuming Mary was the informant.

The address might be the same as Mary's in 1871. (25 Queen Street )

From the same link as above:

Details contained on a death certificate include:
• Name, date and place of death.
• Date and place of birth (before 1969 a certificate only showed age of deceased).
• Occupation and usual address.
• Cause of death.
• The person who gave information for the death registration.

***Update ***

So I ordered the marriage certificates and death certificate and below is the information I have.

Marriage of John Burke * Mary Maryatt (Marriott)
29th April 1862 St. Mary's Chapel Wednesbury
John's father - John Burke General Labourer
Mary's father - John Maryatt ( Marriott) General Labourer

I am so desperate to find the origins of the Burke family - it's my mums fathers family and as she's ill i'd love to be able to give her this information sooner rather than later. I've heard how difficult it is to trace Irish families and especially with a name like John Burke :-( there appears to be 100's of them.

All help as always is greatly appreciated :-D

Deb -

Please can you tell us everything that's on the 1869 death cert, just in case anything turns out to be a clue, however distant?

Just a possibility for John in 1861, which might be where the Irish connection comes in.
I know the age doesn't quite match the age of the man who died in 1869, but info on censuses isn't always accurate.
This man is a coal miner, which would fit with the death cert .:

However, as already said, John Burke is a very common name, and we don't know where in Ireland he may have been born.

There are lots of baptisms of children named John Burk(e) 1836-40 on irishgenealogy.ie - many with fathers named John - and there will be others whose records haven't survived.
