ArgyllGran Report 6 Sep 2021 13:19

After posting Charles's army record, Maddie asked "What happened to Annie?".

I think we should be asking "What happened to Ellen Jane?"

It seems to me that Charles was with Annie from 1905 onwards (the date of "marriage" stated in 1911 census), and remained with her until she died.

Ellen may have been named as NOK just because she was his legal wife - but at the address Charles shared with Annie.

The family seem to be missing from the 1901 census, so we can't see if Charles and Ellen were still together then or not.

In 1911 census, Charles and Annie's address is 29 Sidmouth Street.

Charles is on the 1912 ER at that address:

Charles Papworth
in the London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Name: Charles Papworth
Electoral Date: 1912
Street Address: 29 Sidmouth street
Ward or Division/Constituency: St Pancras South
County or Borough: Camden, England

However, although that's his "Place of abode", there's also a column for "Description of Qualifying Property", which has 29 Sidmouth Street, 39 Harrison Street, and 11 Britannia Street.

In 1910 he (or at least someone named Charles Papworth) is at 33 Harrison Street.

In 1912, James Wing is at 11 Britannia Street.

Re Ellen Jane Fisher in 1911 -

she may be Ellen Jane Reed, who married George Fisher in Woking (Guildford reg district) in Dec qr 1897

They're living in Woking in 1901.
They had a daughter Florence in 1901. Florence is living with an uncle and aunt in 1911.
They also had a daughter Jessie Maud in 1898, who died 1899 and is buried in Woking.

I expect Helena died in infancy, although there seems to be no record of it.

She may have been a sickly baby, as her parents seem to have been hedging their bets by having her baptised twice - C of E in 1895, and RC in 1898.

Can't see Charles or Ellen (or Annie for that matter) in 1901.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Sep 2021 18:32

No, not that travel record.

Helena could not possibly be an assistant steward (who would be male in any case) on a ship at the age of eight.

Already posted Annie Frances and Charles William together at 21 Harrison Street in 1927.
They were at that address in 1920 - 29.

Alfred James Papworth is with them in 1929.
He's presumably Annie's Eatwell son, born 1891 - birth already posted.

Charles and Annie were clearly still together in late 1913 or early 1914., in spite of Ellen being his NOK in August 1914.

At same address - Charles William Papworth. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

That's the same address as for Ellen Jane in the army record.

Unfortunately the 1914 ER only lists heads of households, so only Charles is listed at 21 Harrison Street.

Strange!

Charles married Ellen Jane in 1894, and she was his NOK in 1914, as shown in Maddie's post above.

BUT Charles was with Annie and the children in 1911 (already posted)

Ellen was in Camberwell Infirmary in 1911 (already posted) - listed as Fisher, but married.

Did he and Ellen separate and then reunite?

Or was Ellen his NOK just because she was his legal wife, and Annie wasn't?
