Badly Hurt In Scotland

Word has been received by Sarah Honeychurch that her father, Christopher Martin, who left here about five years ago for Scotland, was seriously injured in a mine near Glasgow about two months ago. He is not expected to live. He formerly resided at Lee Park and was well known as a mine contractor, having lived here over fifteen years.

If you Google Scottish Mining there are several sites with information. I have been looking at the one below, but there is no Christopher Martin listed in 1903, or 1904, where I looked in case he didn't die until the year following the accident.

There are a couple of John Martins, who may be related.

This particular site would be great for anybody with Scottish ancestors in the mining industry.

Thankyou Andysmum I will look at that. The Martin side of my family is a bit of a minefield, many Martin's marrying Martin's, trying to prove if they are related to each other!! I suspect they are. Names repeating themselves, and with no middle initial its really hard sometimes. I go round in circles, giving up and going back all the time.

I did know from my Grandmother that the Martins came from Cornwall, but now I find they also descended from Scotland, a lot emigrated to the USA, this now explains why I have so much Scottish DNA. Which until this week surprised me.

I have also done my Parents and my DNA, Martin is my Mums side, and we have more DNA matches relating to Martins than any other.

I appreciate your post, thank you.

Although it stated in the newspaper article that Christopher wasn't expected to live, he did live and returned to Wilkes-Barre where he died in 1912.

Could be another branch of the family, the only James Martin I have was baptised 16 Dec 1836, Ludgvan, Cornwall. No initial E though. Haven't looked for a spouse for him yet, but he is the brother of Christopher Martin 1849-1912. There are so many with the same common name and no middle name/initial.

Are there any specific Martins you are looking for, Deborah?

Deborah

Deborah Report 1 Oct 2021 19:23

There is a Martin who I am trying to see if she is a relative of mine. My previous post dated 9th September 2021. I am trying to prove whether or not she is a relation. My Great Aunt Bessie was sent to live with her when Bessie's Mother died.

My Great Grandmother Charity Potter nee Martin died in childbirth in 1911, and all 5 siblings were sent to live with relatives. I know where the other 4 went but Bessie was sent to a Mary Honour Humphreys. Mary married a man called Evan Jones, I presume he died and she married a Joseph Humphreys. I have the marriage certificates.

I cant think why she would not have been sent to a relation when all the others were.

I have her birth certificate, she was born 5th July 1867 at Highway, Illogan. Spelt Mary Honor on BC. Father William Martin, Mother Nanny/Nancy Martin nee Martin. Father a Copper miner.

To be honest I have given up looking, I thought I would wait for the 1921 census and see if that helps.
