Thank you for all of your help. I think I will wait until his original birth certificate to arrive.

Sorry, I don't know.

You can email GRO and ask them:

If you would like to ask us a question, or want to know more about one of our services before you order a certificate you can email us directly at [email protected]
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/contact_us.asp

Or just wait for the cert to arrive!

Ok thank you. Will that show on the one that I have sent for as well as Ralph was not adopted until he was a bou 5 years old?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Nov 2021 20:22

It's the birth cert which would have the note in the right-hand column - not the adoption cert (if any exists).

Sandra

Thank you. I will find out if my daughter in law has the adoption certificate to check. Thank you for your help.

If there was a formal adoption, the birth certificate should note this in the column on the far right.

Thank you Shirley for replying to my post about Ralph. I will ask my daughter in law if she knows if he did possess a birth certificate of any kind. I have sent for his original birth certificate for her. Thank you for your help.

As his name wasn’t changed it could have more an informal arrangement within the family especially as young Ralph was 3 years old when his uncle married

Did he ever have a birth certificate in his possession ?

:-)

Thank you for all your information.

She could apply for the adoption cert on the GRO website -

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_select.asp

It's free to register, then there's a fee for the cert -

but she would have to know the year of adoption (+/- 1).

If money were no object, she could make more than one application, with different three-year spans of possible year of adoption.

If it turns out that there's no adoption cert, then it must have been an informal family arrangement as I suggested earlier.

Thank you ArgyllGran for all your really interesting information. Would you know if his daughter could apply for his adoption papers as her father has passed away. ? I have sent for his birth certificate as she has never seen it.

If the adoption was a formal one, then as well as his original birth cert he would have an adoption cert, which is not available to us online.

However, as the adoption was within the family, and didn't involve a change of name, it may only have been an informal arrangement.

There was no adoption legislation in England or Wales until 1926.

Could anyone help with any information about Ralph William Nicholson born 1927. I am asking for my daughter in law. Ralph was her father The information she has is that his birth mother was Louisa Nicholson. He was adopted when young by an Uncle Ralph W. Nicholson, do not know date. I have looked up his birth and I find that he was born in Castle Ward Northumbria, his mother is listed as Nicholson. I have sent for his birth certificate as my daughter in law said he must have had a new one when he was adopted as she has never seen the one issued at birth. Would be very grateful for any information. Thank you.
