From what document are you taking his year of birth?

As Maddie has shown, there were three children named Samuel Culpan born 1862-4, and registered in Halifax reg district.

Yours is not necessarily the one with stepfather William Dewhirst.

So it’s likely that the father’s name was ‘dreamed up’ for the marriage…IF we have the right man, in view of the OP’s spelling of his surname

OR - he gave his stepfather's first name! On the marriage cert his father's occupation is given as 'Maker-up' William Dewhirst's occ on 1871 census is 'Wool maker-up'

The birth cert is needed for absolute accuracy
