Hi I'm wondering if someone can help I'm looking to see if Margaret had a second marriage but Im.struggling to find one.
Information I have is her first marriage was to a Tony Simmons on 1st December 1945 but believe that marriage broke down about 1963/64.
All I know is she supposedly owned a shop in Maidstone with a man called Len but I can't seem to find a marriage.
I believe she died in 1984/5 but can't find a death in the first married name of Simmons which makes me think she had re-married, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

In what year was Margaret born?

She and Tony may have had at least one child, a son in 1959 in Chatham.

In 1928 I believe as she was 17 when she married & believe she was from Medway area. Yes they had a son Malcolm Simmons who unfortunately has passed away so can't ask him for any information. :-)

Her son was born in 1946

If you know her exact DoB look for deaths for the forename only on freebmd

Who were her parents?

Her death doesn’t appear to have been picked up, as there is no obvious record for the woman in 1939

Anna

Anna Report 3 Aug 2022 16:42

Her father's name was Rev William Palmer on her marriage certificate, I believe he married an Edith Sillett in 1920

ErikaH Report 3 Aug 2022 16:46

If you have the right parents, Margaret’s birth was registered OND1928

You say the Simmons marriage broke down, but unless there was actually a divorce she couldn’t have got remarried.

If that is the case she may just have ‘taken’ another partners name and have been known by that.

She could be still alive and heading for a century.

The man on the 1939 above is a chimney sweep - not a member of the clergy

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 3 Aug 2022 16:56

When did the son die? Did his mother attend his funeral?

What was Margaret’s home address when she married?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2022 16:59

Yes, can't be the right family in 1939.

I don't see the son's death, up to 2020, in England/Wales.
Nor in Scotland, up to a few weeks ago.

Unless she fibbed ;-)

:-D

With regard to the 1939 register. It is possible that Margaret was an early evacuee. I have an elderly relative of the same age ( still alive) who is not on the register with her parents as her school had already evacuated.

She is not a redacted entry.

No record on 1939 of a Margaret Palmer who married a Simmons

Equally, none for the possible sister

When Margaret married Tony Simmons she was living at 8, Valley Road, Gillingham so Ive just looked at her marriage certificate again I think her dad's occupation could be RN, would that mean royal navy?

Her son Malcolm died in 2014.

Yes possibly she hadn't married the man we believe was called Len.

But she died of cancer in her fifties believe 56ish but I can't find record under maiden name or Simmons, which makes me think she mighty have re-married

Can’t put much as my iPad is running out of power. William was an Able seaman on HMS Gibraltar when he married.

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2022 17:34

In the 1939 record posted earlier, there's a note for William, saying "Pensioner, AB Royal Navy."
It's out of alignment with the rest of his record, which is why I didn't notice it before.

So -
as the 1939 family is the correct one after all , this might PERHAPS be Joyce in 1939 if evacuated:

Joyce Palmer
in the 1939 England and Wales Register
Name: Joyce Palmer [Joyce Lovett]
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Single
Birth Date: xxxxxxxx [removed in case still living ]
Residence Date: 1939
Address: 8
Residence Place: Wells, Somerset, England
Occupation: At School
Line Number: 25
Schedule Number: 232
Sub Schedule Number: 3
Enumeration District: Wosd
Borough: Wells
Registration district: 313/1
Household Members Age
Bertram G Hand 58
Thiery E Speuring 30
Joyce Palmer 14
Eva J Sutherland 14

Married in Stepney in 1944

EDIT:

quite possibly the wrong Joyce above.

Ancestry suggests that Joyce Annie married a Jackson in Chatham in 1947, which does seem more likely.

If Margaret did remarry, I'm afraid we won't be able to pinpoint the right marriage.

There are lots of marriages for women named Margaret Simmons or Margaret Palmer.
