Margaret's birth has been posted on here a couple of times - use the info to get a copy cert and thus learn the exact DoB.

Anna -

As Shirley pointed out, the Margaret Simmons who died in 1987 was most likely born Margaret Hayward. At least, they both have the same date of birth.

This is presumably her marriage:

Marriages Sep 1950 (>99%)
Hayward Margaret Simmons Bridge 5b 121
Simmons Tom Hayward Bridge 5b 121

Does your friend have her father's birth cert? As already said, he doesn't appear to have had a middle name at birth.

Anna

You can look up Margaret’s birth on freebmd and get the references you need then you can buy the certificate from the GRO to learn her actual birthdate.

It might be worth looking at the Kent newspapers on the British Newspapers archives to see if there is anything on there to help.

Margaret was my best friends Grandmother but unfortunately due to family circumstances she never got to meet her. Her dad was Malcolm John Simmons who passed away in 2014 & unfortunately she never asked him questions about her Grandmother. She was told by her mum that Margaret had left Tony Simmons when Malcolm was 13 so would be around 1959. Also been told that she had married Len/Leonard & ran a shop in Maidstone &stayed in Kent upto her death but as we can't find a marriage its looking more like she just lived with him. My friend believes she was around the age of 56ish when she passed,so the record that's been found above could be her in 1987. This is all the information she has been told so we don't have an exact birth date for Mararet all we know was she was17 when she married Tony in 1945.
Thank you all for your help :-)

It would be helpful if you gave some idea of how you come to be connected to this woman - might give us a ‘handle’

Are you sure the son died in 2014 because that’s a Malcolm John on the record

Her son was only registered as Malcolm

There is a Malcolm John too reg 1946 in East Sussex different family

Name: Malcolm J Simmons
Registration Date: Jul 1946
[Aug 1946]
[Sep 1946]
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration District: Uckfield
Inferred County: East Sussex
Mother's Maiden Name: Staplehurst
Volume Number: 5h
Page Number: 504

Probably this family

Marriages Mar 1929
Simmons Arthur A Staplehurst Uckfield 2b 253
STAPLEHURST Alice M Simmons Uckfield 2b 253

So he is the one who died in 2014

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2022 23:42

In the period 1982-88, these are the only deaths in Kent of a Margaret with no middle name, and whose birth would have been registered in the last quarter of 1928:

Deaths 1988
RADBURN MARGARET 25SE1928 THANET 16 1529

Deaths 1985
HUNT MARGARET 21NO1928 CHATHAM 16 582

HOWEVER -
Margaret Hunt might have been nee Herron.
Margaret Radburn might have been unmarried and born in Croydon.
We don't know where your Margaret died - maybe not in Kent.

If she didn't remarry, and moved away from Kent, there's this death:

Deaths 1985 (>99%)
PALMER MARGARET 21OC1928 ROCHDALE 39 402

Probably all red herrings - but posting just in case.

As I suggested earlier, if you knew her DoB, you could make a more informed seacrh

Anna

Anna Report 3 Aug 2022 19:13

No I misread the rev.

I know she left Tony Simmons around 1959 & believe moved to Maidstone & ran a shop with a man that all I've been told is Len so could be Leonard I guess, but have yet to find a marriage after 1959 that has a spouse name starting Len/ Leonard under her maiden name or first marriage name so I'm going to take it she never married, just strange I can't find a death record for her in either of those names but know she defo stayed in the Kent area & died about age 56/57 so would be about 1984 ????

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 3 Aug 2022 18:57

So her father wasn’t ‘Rev’ :-\ :-\

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2022 18:14

If Margaret did remarry, I'm afraid we won't be able to pinpoint the right marriage.

There are lots of marriages for women named Margaret Simmons or Margaret Palmer.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2022 17:34

In the 1939 record posted earlier, there's a note for William, saying "Pensioner, AB Royal Navy."
It's out of alignment with the rest of his record, which is why I didn't notice it before.

So -
as the 1939 family is the correct one after all , this might PERHAPS be Joyce in 1939 if evacuated:

Joyce Palmer
in the 1939 England and Wales Register
Name: Joyce Palmer [Joyce Lovett]
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Single
Birth Date: xxxxxxxx [removed in case still living ]
Residence Date: 1939
Address: 8
Residence Place: Wells, Somerset, England
Occupation: At School
Line Number: 25
Schedule Number: 232
Sub Schedule Number: 3
Enumeration District: Wosd
Borough: Wells
Registration district: 313/1
Household Members Age
Bertram G Hand 58
Thiery E Speuring 30
Joyce Palmer 14
Eva J Sutherland 14

Married in Stepney in 1944

EDIT:

quite possibly the wrong Joyce above.

Ancestry suggests that Joyce Annie married a Jackson in Chatham in 1947, which does seem more likely.

Can’t put much as my iPad is running out of power. William was an Able seaman on HMS Gibraltar when he married.

Anna

Anna Report 3 Aug 2022 17:12

When Margaret married Tony Simmons she was living at 8, Valley Road, Gillingham so Ive just looked at her marriage certificate again I think her dad's occupation could be RN, would that mean royal navy?

Her son Malcolm died in 2014.

Yes possibly she hadn't married the man we believe was called Len.

But she died of cancer in her fifties believe 56ish but I can't find record under maiden name or Simmons, which makes me think she mighty have re-married

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 3 Aug 2022 17:08

No record on 1939 of a Margaret Palmer who married a Simmons

Equally, none for the possible sister

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 3 Aug 2022 17:05

:-D

With regard to the 1939 register. It is possible that Margaret was an early evacuee. I have an elderly relative of the same age ( still alive) who is not on the register with her parents as her school had already evacuated.

She is not a redacted entry.
