Elizabeth Vernon c1805

Chrissie2394 Report 13 Sep 2022 20:58

Elizabeth Vernon was baptised on 7th April 1805 at Hanbury, Staffordshire. She was the daughter of George Vernon and Hannah Hedge.

George and Hannah had another daughter named Elizabeth who was baptised at Hanbury on 1st May 1808 which makes me think that the first Elizabeth had died.

I'm guessing that Elizabeth born 1808 was the one who married Thomas Greatorix on 11th July 1831 and then William Babb on 27th December 1838. Both marriages were at Hanbury.

I believe Elizabeth Babb died in 1862 in Burton district which would be correct for Hanbury, age given was 56 years which may be only a year out for Elizabeth born 1808

I wanted to find death for the oldestest Elizabeth before adding the two marriages to the youngest Elizabeth. Would someone mind taking a look please as I'm not having much luck.

Thank you

Surely the marriages would be for the younger one………….

Was an age given on the 1838 cert?

No maiden name is given for Hannah on either baptism record. Could there be two couples with the same forenames?

Just said Full Age ErikaH

I just thought that the first Elizabeth must have died to name another daughter with the same name.

Fortunately the parish record on FMP gave fathers name so I knew it was a second marriage.

If the supposed first child had died, the subsequent records would be for the younger child - not the older one

My apologies ErikaH, it's been a long day. Yes the marriages should be for the younger Elizabeth, I just didn't want to add the husbands to her before finding a death for the older one.

I've now edited it so that it's correct.

FMP has Staffordshire OPR's.

There is a Uttoxeter burial of an Elizabeth Vernon in 1808, but that one shows with a spouse John and also an Eliza aged 0 in Burslem buried 29 July 1806 (original says Infant).

It does seem that both Elizabeth's were baptised at Hanbury, daughter of a George and Hannah. There are other later baptisms to a George and Hannah Vernon in Hanbury and a marriage for them there in 1804.

Looking at the original I can't see that there has been a missed transcription from the Hanbury burial registers between the first baptism date and the second.

Age in census if correct would have Elizabeth Babb born 1804/5 in 1851(age 46) born 1804/5 in 1861(age 56) and 1801-1806 (age 35 so between 35 and 39) in 1841. The death you have picked out has her as aged 56 in Q1 1862 so born 1805/6. All could fit a birth in time for an April 1805 baptism.

Logic would say same parents, first child died but no burial found and ages better fit with the earlier baptism.

Several trees on ancestry have Elizabeth born 1805 Hanbury and all have her death as 13 June 1806. Whilst one has the 1805 baptism, no-one has a burial record.

Thanks greyghost.

I'll have to see if any of the tree owners will respond to a message regarding
where the date of 13 June 1806 has come from.

Six Ancestry trees claim that Elizabeth 1805 died on 13 June 1806.

Only one attempts to provide "proof" - in the form of a record for a totally different child:

Elizabeth Vernon
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Elizabeth Vernon
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 4 Jun 1800
Baptism Place: Brailsford,Derby,England
Death Date: 13 Jun 1806
Father: William Vernon
Mother: Hannah
FHL Film Number: 422190, 497387

Probably the other trees have just copied the date without looking too closely at the supposed "proof".

What it does prove is that one shouldn't trust what someone else has put on their tree - as if we needed reminding!

Of course, she may not have been sure of her age.....................

The death record also fits precisely with an April 1805 baptism

Perhaps there was only one Elizabeth, baptised twice for some reason.

Unfortunately there's no image of the baptism records to see on Ancestry - there might be some explanatory note on the second one.

EDIT:
there's an image of the record on FS (page 381 of the image range) - no helpful note:

Baptisms 1808.
May 1st: Elizabeth, daughter of George and Hannah Vernon, Hanb. Woodend.

The 1805 baptism has exactly the same wording - except date, of course.

I had a post out back in 2017 with the same question so I'm at a loss for a reason as well. Mine were definitely the same people.

This post dates from 2009 and has several possible reasons how this can happen. It makes interesting reading.
