my great grandad was called John Henry Harris. He lived in Windmill Lane Deptford and ran a lighterman business on the River Thames. His father (not sure about his Christian name) was ferryman on the river until the Greenwich foot tunnel was opened- he lost his livlihood and was made a freeman of the City of London as part of his compensation. Has anyone got any more information? |
