The surname Imeson is generally thought to be of Anglo-Saxon origin, the name being derived from the Son of Imma. The name Imma being an Old English personal name, the meaning of which is a whole or complete person. The Imma in question was apparently the second wife of an English Lord and the child of that Lord and the Lady Imma came to be referred to as Imma’s Son. Therefore, those with the name Imeson and all other derivations such as Im, Imm, Imme, Immeson, Immison, Imison, Impson, Imerson, can trace their roots back to the Lady Imma. The earliest historical record of this family name is found in Somerset where it known from historical records that a Thomas Imme was resident in the year 1243. The family were later to be found in Gloucestershire, Yorkshire and London, the highest concentrations of the Imeson surname from census records being in Yorkshire with London having the next highest population. The Imeson Coat of Arms is a Gold Shield with a Fesse and a Demi-Lion, the family motto is “Audacter et Sincere” which translates as Boldly and Sincerely. |
