The name Robertson was allegedly first given to Clan Donnachaid after the battle of Bannockburn. Clan Donnachaid was perhaps not best known for its war-like skills and were classed as the 'Camp Followers'. - I guess their job was to make the beds of the woad-wearers and have their tea on the table for them after a hard days battle. Some sources even suggest that they may well have been some sort of It Aint Half Hot Mum Troop Show. However, on with the facts - According to legend, the battle was pretty much an even-steven sort of affair when members of Clan Donnachaid went up to have a look see - obviously out of spear and arrow range. Edward's troops, on seeing Clan Donnachaid on the Horizon and believing them to be re-inforcements decided enough was enough and high-tailed it towards and over the border. Again, according to legend, Robert the Bruce honoured Clan Donnachaid for their derring-doo and said that from then on, they would be known as 'Sons of Robert' . I'm convinced. |
