Cooper relatives in the Forest of Dean area, or Brighton Sussex. A friend has done some research on my behalf to trace back my Grandfathers family to the Forest of Dean. We have made a connection to William Cooper who married Harriet Hale at Flaxley in 1837. They were living in Newnham in the 1851 census with five children Charles (12) James (10) MaryAnn (8) George (5)- my Great Grandfather and Hester or Esther (2). By the 1881 census they were at Broad Street in Brighton. William had gone from miner (at his marriage) to gamekeeper (at Newnham) and was now a Fruiterer & Greengrocer. Living with them were their daughter Hester, now married to James Weston (a joiner) and their daughter also Hester (5 yrs old). Also my grandfather (their grandson George 8 yrs old), plus Harriet's sister Charlotte Hale 70 yrs old (a former domestic servant). We know my Grandfather was sent to Canada when he was about 12/13 yrs old. Where his father George was we don't know, we believe his mother Rachel (Kell or Kells) may have died in childbirth with another sibling. We have been unable to find any further trace, death certificates or other word. Just that James Cooper died in Dora Creek, New South Wales, Australia on 4th December 1902, and that his sister Hester Hale Weston was the one who settled his affairs in this country. We are still unable to find any more information, please check if you have Cooper or Weston in your family tree! Any information would be gratefully recieved. Marion Spence nee Geach
