Christine Hogh would welcome info. on Smith's from Ringmer, Sussex. My grandfather, George, was one of a large family (16 I think) born to Job and Kate Smith, both buried in Ringmer Churchyard. Job was a horse coper and he may have had Romany origins before settling in Ringmer. One member of the family made bricks, I believe, and was responsible for making the bricks for the original Glyndebourne Opera house. A cousin of my father (also George) worked in the Box Office at Glyndebourne in the 30s. My father used to talk about his grandmother Kate, who died in her nineties, living at 'Fingerpost Cottage'. |
