Trying to find information about my great-uncles, William Yates COOK (b.1882) and Herman Lloyd COOK (b.1890), both of whom were born in Loftus, East Cleveland. The 1901 census shows William living with his parents in Loftus and his profession is listed as "Analytical Chemist" and I believe he worked at the Skinningrove Steel Works. I have since learned that his job moved him away from the Loftus area and that he was promoted to the title of "Blast Furnace Manager". A marriage cert for him in 1916 showed that he had married Mary FOSTER in Wednesbury in the West Midlands. Mary's father was William James FOSTER, a managing director and also my great-uncle's boss. Herman Lloyd COOK, or Lloyd as he was known moved to Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham. He had a talent for music and gave private tuition although his marriage cert in 1925 showed him to be a manager of a boot merchants (presumably a shoe shop) and living in Gateshead. He married Eleanor NAVIN in Houghton-le-Spring, some 16 years his junior. If anyone has any information relating to these two relatives of mine then I would very much like to hear from you. I have yet to ascertain whether either William or Lloyd had any offspring and this is something that I would also like to find out. William and Lloyd had 5 other siblings, Mary Jane, Eva, Margaret (Maggie), Arthur - my grandfather, and Thomas Howard. Their father, Thomas also ran a music business in Loftus, selling instruments such as harmoniums. N.B. Loftus appears to have been called Lofthouse prior to the start of the 1900s for about a 15 year period. |
