In addition to Peter's notes on when the name Moon came to England, Moneaux was the family name that came to Scotland in 1715 from France to help the Scots in the first Jacobite rebellion, from then on they fled to Ireland (around the Kilarney area), with the name changing to Mooney. 1745 saw he return of the Mooney name to Scotland for the 2nd rebellion. Then came the scattering with the bulk fleeing to the Essex area and many points in between, with the name changing again, this time to Moon. I am told that the moons were affiliated to a clan because of their help, possibly to the Perthshire/Duke of perthshire clan, but this is a bit sketchey on details. If any one can shed further light, it would be most appreciated.
