My great grandfather, William Wood, lived in Stone, Staffordshire until he was 23. He then moved to Armitage, Staffordshire where he became Headmaster of the Church of England School. At first he lived in the school house attached to the school with his wife Ann but as the family grew they moved to the middle of the village of Armitage into a house which became known as Stone House. I think that he had a large number of children some of whom went on to become big business men in London. One in the Corn Exchange, another in the stock exchange, a daughter, Frances, became my grandmother when she married Josiah Thomas Evans, who after her husbands death in 1887 moved with her family of five children to Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. |
