Hi Joan

My mum and I have been looking for my grandfathers family for three years, and you are the only one to reply.

So here we go, his name was Charles Fredrick Harris known as Charlie he was born on 19th Dec 1914 in Billericay Union, he was born out off wedlock and his birth was not registerd.

From papers my mum has we know he went to Dehurst school in Cheshunt 12yrs old (1926) and was Confirmed in Cheshunt Parish Church 15yrs old (1929), he enlisted in the army at Walthem Cross 21yrs old(1935).

After countless letters to his School and the church only to be told all records for those years were distroyed.

My mum then sent for his army records which told us that his next of kin was a Walter John Atkinson, 67 Cromwell Ave, Cheshunt, these records took 6mths to come.

While we were waiting we wrote to Bannado's to our amazment they had him on record, and sent us a copy of a boarding out document which said that his mother was 19 yrs old(c1896) but did not give her name it said that she also was illegitimate and that the putative father of Charles was a Sidney Ward 25 yrs old(1890) a soldier who had been sent to France.

His step maternal granfather 50yrs old was a soldier for 22yrs and was also sent to France 1914, it says that his grandmother who was 45yrs had 6 children ages from 14yrs to a few months there were no adresses and no names.

The lady that had applied for charles to be boarded out was Miss F C Mellandain 12 King Edward Road Brentwood.

We assume Charles was given his mothers maiden name of Harris.

I do hope we have a conection, please keep in touch.

Regards Neil.
