I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this: My ggrandfather Henry Ward m. Annie Leary on 5 Feb 1882, on the same day and at the same church as Henry's sister, Maria m. Stephen Galvin. The couples married at St Mary's Somers Town - and both couples gave addresses there (Henry and Maria t one, Annie at another nearby, Stephen at yet another nearby. All well and good so far. Except that in the 1881 census both couples are down as married, Maria and Stephen having a 3 year old child. But they weren't living in Somers Town. In 1881, 1891 and 1901, Henry and Annie were in Southwark in Warner Street. In 1881, 1891 and 1901, Maria and Stephen are in Islington. Does anyone think this was a commonplace thing - not only that couples would pretend to be married for the census (not really very surprising - cohabitation being quite common) but that couples would actually travel such distances to hear the banns read - or could they get someone else (one of the witnesses to both weddings probably did live in Somers Town, though is elusive at the censuses!) to hear them? Any ideas gratefully received! Loretta |
