I’ve got a long way with tracing my family tree but I ground to a halt with my maternal great grandfather, Josiah Charles Cocks. My Maternal Grandmother was Florence Eliza Cocks, b 23 Aug 1899. Her birth and marriage certificates both show her father as Josiah Cocks and her mother is shown as Susan Elizabeth née Marskall. The marriages index for Q4 1884 shows Josiah Charles Cocks and Susan Elizabeth Marskall on the same page of the Fulham register. The 1901 census shows Charles and Susan Cox with their children Emily, Charles, George, Beatrice, Lily, James and Florence, plus Susan’s mother Eliza, all living in Kensington and claiming to have been born there. However there is no sign of any of them in 1891, although Eliza appears, living in Hammersmith with her son George. As far as I can see, 1881 and 1871 show no Josiah or Charles Cocks, Cock or Cox of definitely the right age, place of birth and occupation. The births index for Q1 1864 shows a Joseph Charles Cocks born in Kensington, but I’m not certain it’s him. Can anybody help me find out more about this strand of my ancestry? David |
