Trying to find Cox

I am trying to trace my gr-gr-grandfather ROBERT CUMMINGS. He had a son WILLIAM COX CUMMINGS (b 05/05/1884 Battersea Wandsworth) to a woman named MARY ALICE COX (B 1855 West Hartlepool Durham). I am unsure if they ever married as I am unable to trace any marriage between them. William was born at 55 Kingsley Street. Robert was listed on William's birth certificate in 1884 as a Labourer at an Iron Works and on William's marriage certificate in 1904 as deceased and that he was an engineer. From family stories we believe William was orphaned which means his parents died between 1891 and 1901. Mary Alice was listed on William's birth certificate as living at 40 Gladstone Street Battersea. Does anyone know who Robert was?
