Trying to find Evans

I've been trying to find information on my great grandfather for 20 years. I'd be grateful for help and/or advice. This is the family story: THOMAS LLOYD EVANS was the son of William Evans and Margaret Owens. He was one of about 10 children. I think he was born about 1840. Sometines his birth is listed, on his children's certificates, as Holyhead, and sometines as Manchester. He spoke of having a 'Grandmother Lloyd'. He was an Engineer who went to sea to get a Marine Engineering Certificate. Before he set sail he went to say farewell to his Uncle at Lloyd's of London. This uncle left him something in his will, which TL Evans did nothing about claiming The crew jumped ship in Melbourne, Australia, to go to the gold diggings. Thomas stayed on board for a while then went looking for crew for the return voyage. When it was found that he had foundry skills he was persuaded to stay. My first record of him is his marriage in Bendigo in 1871. He then went to Charters Towers, Queensland. His daughter recalled walking with him and meeting a woman from Wales, who said, 'Mr Evans, what are you doing here? You're an educated man. You're wasted in such a place.' (So his name really was Evans.) A hospital admission stated that he arrived in Australia on the 'Schavina'. I cannot find this ship. I thought he would have a crew agreement, but can't find anything, and don't know where to look for records of his study or training. Does anyone know about him, or what I could do next? Miriam. |
