Searching for any information on my maternal grandfather FREDERICK (FREDDIE) JOHN COX who deserted her and disappeared around 1939-41. We think he was born in London (abt. 1892). He married ELIZA MARY NEWBY (b.1896) sometime around 1912-16 in Islington. They had three daughters: AMY COX (b. abt 1912, childless), SARAH JANE COX (b. 1914, childless) & DOREEN FLORENCE MARY COX (b. 1935, three children including me). The family lived in EDINBOROUGH and/or CORNWALL COTTAGES in Popham Street, Islington. Details of his life are very sketchy to but there are a few snippets. He worked as a COAL STOKER at a gas works and was enlisted as a stoker on a SUBMARINE during WWI which apparently hit the seabed. It seems he had at least one sister who lived on GRAY'S INN ROAD, Clerkenwell, around 1939/40. Family rumour also has it that he was involved in a murder which was known as THE CHRISTMAS TREE KILLING. His state of mind has been affected by the submarine incident. He had also left my grandmother at one point to live with another woman but my grandmother took him back. Finally there was a cut-throat RAZOR ATTACK at CORNWALL COTTAGES (C. 1940) where he seriously wounded my grandmother, one of her sisters, and one of my aunts. It's hard to get details because since few in the family would discuss the matter. Shortly after this he disappeared and was never heard of again. That's about it. Does any of this information ring any bells with all of you? Please contact me if it does. Best regards, Peter S
